Dr Susannah Self is a composer, painter and installation artist. She draws much of her inspiration from the North Sea where she lives . Her lifetime mentor is the American composer, John Cage whom she worked with in Canada. She composes opera and installations that involve three dimensional materials, film and soundscapes. Alongside this she paints daily. She has had many exhibitions and the sale of her artwork fund her opera productions. Susannah’s compositional and artistic methodology of quilting can be seen particularly in her latest opera works commissioned by Tête a Tête Festival 2021 and 2022 in London: 'HER BODY' and 'She is My Pharaoh'. Her history as an imaginative trail-blazing composer and performer in international opera houses (Royal Opera, Vlaamse Oper, Opéra du Rhin and Lyon Opera) has led her to compose many operas and chamber works. Recent commissions include: Music Theatertage Festival in Vienna, Birmingham Contemporary Music Group, Spitalfields Festival, English Touring Opera and Birmingham Opera Company. She trained at The Royal College of Music and Cambridge University and recently completed a fully funded PhD in composition at The Royal Birmingham Conservatoire in 2020 .
