Martin Pigg is a Norfolk-based British wood sculptor whose art is deeply rooted in themes of nature, regeneration, and sustainability, heavily influenced by the organic origins of his material and the Maori concept of Koru. His work transforms locally sourced, often diseased or storm-fallen, timber into evocative, abstract sculptures for both indoor and outdoor settings.
Core Philosophy and Inspiratio:
Before becoming a full-time artist, Pigg worked as a qualified tree surgeon, which gave him an intimate understanding and appreciation for wood. This background is central to his artistic philosophy: he views interesting pieces of wood—hollow stems, burrs, and roots—as sculptures in themselves. His primary inspiration stems from time spent in New Zealand, where he connected with the Maori culture. The Maori Koru symbol, representing life, new beginnings, and regeneration, is the guiding ethos behind his work. Pigg aims to give new life to trees that would otherwise be discarded, ensuring their story continues as a piece of art that could last for centuries.
Style and Technique:
Pigg's style is best described as contemporary and abstract, focusing on organic shapes and smooth, tactile forms that highlight the wood's natural beauty and grain patterns. He works sympathetically with the material, allowing the unique growth patterns and natural imperfections to steer his hands and tools, rather than imposing a rigid design.
