Biography:
I trained as a traditional printmaker in fine art, embracing fine print photography and drawing into my practice. My passion is in the analogue potential of historic photographic processes and how these may be used as fine art mediums. I am only one of a handful of people specialising in carbon transfer printing in the UK and the only one that prints in full colour. I can work using modern pigments or undertake research and calibrate for historic colours. I run workshops and take on commissions. I have also established a reputation in the field of public art and have work in both private and public collections in the UK and the USA.
Artist statement:
The images presented for the North Norfolk Studio website are from ‘The Contemplations’. An ongoing series of images that are inspired by my garden in Norfolk. These are intimate and self-reflexive portrayals of nature. Connection to memories, delightful discoveries, opportune moments, study of and meditations on the natural world around me are reflected in my choice of subject and compositions. These works evoke a North European tradition of the ‘Vanitas’ still life, exploring notions of life and death.
Carbon Prints:
Carbon prints are unique handmade works of art. Carbon printing is a pigment and gelatine based photographic process, renowned for its remarkable beauty and archival stability because of the use of pigments over dyes. It has rich shadows, wide tonal range, sharp definition, richness of colour rendition and is considered to be the finest of all the photographic processes. Another highly sought-after characteristic of the medium is the depth of the pigmented gelatine layers that render the image with a subtle relief. It is also a highly versatile medium that can be transferred to a wide variety of surfaces, but commonly paper and glass.
