Chris Kirby is an artist who practices the traditions of coastal and still-life painting .
He paints in a semi-abstract, minimalist, modernist style using acrylics and mixed media on board or canvas - his palette being relatively muted.
Admitted to Kingston School of Art & Design in the late 60s, his early influences include the French post-impressionists - and the St. Ives School, especially artists Ben Nicholson and Christopher Wood.
Artistically, Chris is interested in the placement and juxtaposition of varied shapes and forms, which he often presents in a mildly distorted or "flattened" perspective.
Over the years, he has taken a multi-disciplined approach to his art having practiced: collage, sculptural work, enhanced photo-based artwork, as well as traditional painting on canvas and board. He has exhibited internationally, including galleries in New York (Klompching), London (Truman) and Rome (Spazio Tetenal) - as well as locally.
More recently Chris has concentrated on marine and coastal still-life painting. Painting old working boats is a bit of a thing for him! The North Norfolk coast where he lives has a long tradition of artisan fishing from small wooden boats launched into the waves from the beach. Their catch ranging from whelks to lobster and the famous Cromer crabs! It's a subject that inspires much of his art.
Chris's minimalist style of painting of these old fishing boats and the fisherman that crewed them, harks to years back when the activity of these wooden boats was plentiful around Britain's coastal waters.
Chris is a Friend of the Rescue Wooden Boats Museum in nearby Stiffkey and is a member of the Blakeney Sailing Club.
His delightful studio is adjacent to his house - being a modernised former stable-block - situated in the village of Hindringham, three miles from the North Norfolk coast.
